Entry #2. CLB VS Donda
These two albums have been the biggest and most hyped albums this year. The biggest debate between the two is which one is better? What makes this debate so hard is two things: these albums are two very different projects and there is also the fact that music is subjective. One of the reasons this debate is so huge is because Kanye and Drake have had major differences and it evolved from just making music to seeing who could do it better. In my opinion, I enjoyed Certified Lover Boy a bit more than I enjoyed Donda. I find that there is more music you can vibe to and enjoy with others in CLB than there is in Donda. The songs on Donda feel more soulful and more enjoyable alone. Although that isn't to say there aren't any songs enjoyable, there are songs like Off the Grid and Ok Ok. Both of the albums also share incredible features but they also share a lot of the same artists. The build-up for these two albums has been immense other than the rivalry between Drake and Kanye. Drake announced that he had begun working on this album in 2019 and later said that it would release in 2020. Due to an injury and because of the pandemic Drake was forced to wait another year before he could release Certified Lover Boy. Kanye on the other hand had a different story entirely. At the end of 2019, Kanye began work for a sequel to his album Jesus is King. From there he continued to change aspects of the album, he changed the name to Donda in 2020 and he showed a list of potential songs for the album along with 2 different proposed covers. While Kanye himself never directly said when he was releasing his album his team repeatedly promised dates that were close to his listening parties only for the dates to be pushed back. Finally, on August 29th, Kanye's producers released his album without his permission. Now that these albums have been released they continue to break records and occupy top spots on the charts. While Kanye could have done a bit better Drake certainly fulfilled his role and created a solid all around album.
I feel like picking which one is better is very hard to do, they are both lyrically geniuses who put their heart and soul into their music. i loved both albums (even though i wish kanye had a better verse on MOON)
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion Donda was a big flop. Drake's album was executed much better. My favorite song was Champagne Poetry. The vibe and feel of this song was like a winter afternoon driving down tempe with the windows down. However, Donda did deliver some good songs.
ReplyDeletePersonally I don't listen to most main stream hip hop music but always interesting to see the battles between who's is better. I enjoyed the beef between Eminem and Machine Gun Kelly in 2018.
ReplyDeleteWatching this unravel in real time was crazy. Remember when Donda was supposed to drop last summer? It sucks his label dropped it without his permission, quality over quantity in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteHey, Geovane. Your blog is looking pretty good, and you have some good ideas in your entries. You have some good visual appeal and engagement, but don't forget about text layout as part of that visual element. Also, you are a bit brief in the development of your ideas. Keep digging into analysis and description to create significance for your audience. Work to connect them to your topic, making your ideas relevant and interesting to them. Keep at it.
